The Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on March 15, 2023, after hundreds of Child Victims Act lawsuits. On March 27, 2026, it announced a $148 million settlement with the survivors’ committee covering about 440 people. The deal does not yet include insurers and still needs a survivor vote and court approval.
Facts checked September 18, 2026. Sources are listed at the end of this page.
The Albany settlement
The $148 million comes from the diocese and its affiliates ($98 million) and the diocese’s 126 parishes ($50 million, mainly from parish savings). It does not include several insurance companies that covered the diocese. The diocese and survivors’ committee have said they will keep negotiating with those insurers with the aim of a global settlement, which would add to the total.
The diocese described the agreement as a first step toward a Chapter 11 plan. The committee and the diocese are also negotiating child protection commitments.
What this means if you were abused in the Diocese of Albany
If you filed a claim, you will be asked to vote on the plan once it is filed and the court approves the disclosure statement. Any insurer settlements could increase what survivors receive, so the final figure may be higher than $148 million.
