The Roman Catholic Diocese of Ogdensburg, in New York’s North Country, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on July 17, 2023, after more than 100 Child Victims Act lawsuits. In late August 2026 it filed a reorganisation plan that would create an $83 million fund for about 125 survivors: $45 million from the diocese, parishes, schools and other entities, and about $38 million from insurers.

The Ogdensburg plan

In May 2026 the diocese and the survivors’ committee agreed a $45 million settlement funded by the diocese, all of its parishes, schools and other Catholic entities. Insurance settlements added about $38 million, bringing the proposed fund to $83 million. The diocese announced the plan in an August 25, 2026 letter, and it was filed in court shortly afterwards.

Under the plan, each parish will file its own short Chapter 11 case before the confirmation hearing so that it can be covered by the plan, emerging again within days. The diocese said it hoped the court would approve the plan within a few months.
